How to use SAC Stats

Overview

The Magistrates Court SAC Statistics Dashboard is a web-based tool that allows users to:

  • Explore Magistrates Court sentencing statistics using customisable filters and slicers.
  • Access detailed information about the dashboard, including counting rules, inclusions, and exclusions.
  • Navigate back to the Sentencing Advisory Council (SAC) website for additional resources and information.

There are six sentencing type pages to explore the data, they are

  • All Sentences
  • Imprisonment
  • Home Detention
    • Community Corrections (three sub-tabs included)
    • Community Corrections
    • Community Service Order (CSO) (legacy)

  • Drug Treatment
  • Fine

Filter Panel

Offences – The entire dashboard must be filtered by a single offence (e.g., SECTION).

Information Panel can be accessed via clicking the below icon. It contains key counting rules, list of offences and sentencing outcomes, exclusions and limitations

It shows SAC Statistics data inclusive up to a date, i.e. charges' finalised date

There is a gap between the data’s inclusive end date and the last refresh date due to the database management process

Filter Panel

  1. Filter data by offence

    Note: Offences is a mandatory filter. A single SECTION must be selected to view stats.

    Open the Offence filter

    To open the Offence filter, click the text “Offences” (as below), an “ACT, SECTION” window will open along the top of the dashboard.

    Select a SECTION

    Users MUST select a single SECTION from the Offence filter. There are two methods:
    Method 1: Expend an ACT, then select a SECTION (click a SECTION, not ACT)
    Method 2: Search by keyword(s), then select a SECTION (click a SECTION, not ACT).

    Section search

    Once a SECTION is selected from the filter, all the pages (e.g., Imprisonment, Home Detention etc.) will be applied.
    SACT Stats data are only available for a single SECTION. Views with multiple ACTs or SECTIONs are not supported. When an ACT that contains multiple SECTIONs is selected, the following message will appear. Please select a SECTION (click the SECTION, not the ACT).

Close “Offence” filter
To close this window, either click “ Close ” or “X”

Click the "eraser" on the top right corner of each filter, or use “Clear all” button

To filter data by Calendar Year and Global Sentence, simply click the drop down button and tick the boxes

Note: Calendar Year and Global Sentence are optional filters. When the optional filters is selected from one page, other pages will NOT be applied.

Note: Offences is a mandatory filter. A single SECTION must be selected to view stats (see “Filtering data” section).

The information in the report, including tables, graphs, and statements, will update dynamically based on the combination of filters applied. Users can toggle between table format and chart format by using the toggle available. Additional information can be viewed when toggling to the table view.
